The world is abusing our attention

God knows that I am frail and distractible, and so he treats me gently and compassionately (Psalm 103:13-14). Not so the world, it just sees easy prey. As a limited and fallen thing, I’m a sitting duck for distraction, anxiety, and despair. All of them can easily catch and devour my attention on a daily basis.

Be still...

Whenever I lead folks in centering prayer I begin the time by quoting Psalm 46:10: “Be still and know that I am God.” I then slowly work backwards through it as a meditative point of departure for silent prayer. It’s amazing how well each successive line both emphasizes the whole meaning and invites us to meditate on a new dimension of the whole.

Q&A - How do I enjoy the cyclical dance of life?

A: (from Brandon) I get it! I want to “relax and enjoy the dance” of life with Jesus too. But how!? The simple answer is, you just do.The better answer is that “relaxing and enjoying” is not something you have to do. Rather it’s a “not doing.” It’s creating some space in your heart, mind, and life so that the unexpected, the beautiful, the presence of God, can be noticed.

Disentangling from difficult emotions

I was carrying a bag of hornets over my head, and they were angry! But I couldn’t help myself, I just kept poking the bag, until it broke! …Okay, not a literal bag of hornets, but that’s how I describe my experience with anxiety. My head is often full of fearful thoughts and I can’t seem to stop ruminating on them. Making them bigger and bigger, angrier and angrier. Wouldn’t it be nice if I could get some distance from that bag!?

Rooted! Lessons on emotional resilience from a stubborn mesquite tree.

Long ago, in the faraway land of West Texas, someone once handed me the keys to a Kubota backhoe and said, “See all these mesquite trees? Pull ‘em up.” It was a dream come true! The little boy in me jumped at the chance. The steel! The dirt! The POWER! I was giddy. Until I attacked the first mesquite with my machine. Mesquite trees look like easy prey. They’re short, scrubby, and thin. They look like a stiff breeze could turn them into overgrown tumbleweeds, but they are deceptive devils. Their wood is nearly twice as hard as oak, and they have taproots that descend all the way into Hell. They do not give up easily.
