And not just know him, but for him to know me. For him to see me. My heart is touched by passages of scripture where God directly intervenes in someone’s life. John 1:43-51 is one such passage.

Am I merely escaping the requirement to improve?

Seeing everyone’s end-of-year accomplishment posts or new-year's-resolutions posts on social media makes me feel small. I liked your different way of thinking about self-improvement. However, I do wonder, when measuring progress in life, is it purely between God and me, or do people around me play a role as well? Am I turning to God to escape the difficult requirement of improving?

Technologies of Change

God has given me eternal life and he is bent on making me new, but now the question is, “how does God actually change me?” One thing I know, information alone doesn’t change me. Experience of God—his presence, love, and grace—does. Just knowing that God loves me doesn’t change my desires anymore than just knowing that heart surgery exists fixes my heart. I have to actually receive the surgery.

“The welcome is enough” is based on the truth that God created out of love and graciousness with no need whatsoever. The reason God made you is because He wanted you to exist purely out of graciousness and love. There was no requirement and no need on His part.

In his incarnation, Jesus welcomes all of humanity and our human experience into his presence, into his being. Jesus knows what it's like to be a person. To be a complex human being with thoughts and feelings and everything going awry inside you. He understands us.

We don't have to qualify to be in God's presence

God doesn't require us to be enough in order to be with him. Extending the welcome to others communicates this generous acceptance that God graces on all of us. This is the work that we do as a ministry, to create spaces where you are welcomed and where you are invited to know God's love.

Nothing's according to plan

One thing I can say for sure, my life has not gone according to plan! Now, I admit, I’m not much of a planner. I’ve always had an allergy to making 5 year plans. Although that has more to do with my fear of failure than it does with any principled stance. But I have to say, it’s also because I’ve learned that no one can know what’s going to happen in the next 5 years!
