The story of Mary and Martha teaches us much about Christian contemplation. It shows us that the key is attending to God word. It's not that Mary was meditating and Martha was working, but rather that Martha let her sister distract her from attending to Jesus' words. So let's be all ears for Jesus.

Augustine famously wrote in his Confessions, “O Lord, my heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.”So, here are three things my heart tried to find rest in, other than God, in 2022. God always answers prayer in one of three ways- “yes”, “no”, or “not yet”. More often than not, it seems God’s answer to my prayers has been that last one. And the “not yet” feels excruciating-because it feels more like a “no” and it is very hard to tell the difference. Some days, I feel like Job, and I want to raise my fists to God and yell “Why, God? How could you let this happen? When will it end?”

What does it feel like to receive a compliment? If you are willing, pause for a moment and recall the feeling. What does your body feel like when you accept the truth of a compliment? I feel a warmth settling in the base of my spine, like I can stand up straighter with less effort. The ground beneath me feels flatter, the world more spacious. I can move more freely through my environment.

I realized I have a problem with gratitude. If I have to “repay” the Lord for the good he has done for me then it’s not a gift right?

Words come from my soul. Eyes may be windows into my soul, but words are its breath and life. The Indian elder could only feel the depth of John's words because he couldn’t understand. But to the one who is able to understand, words can reveal a person’s true self, their deepest longings and darkest intentions.
