Wonder is greater than interest. Interest is greater than curiosity
Wonder > interest > Curiosity.
Curiosity is a child hungry for new ideas. Like a finch in Spring, he gathers little seeds of knowledge, but his attention flits here and there, directionless. “More!” he squawks. Without guidance, he becomes greedy and grasping. Curiosity is merely a collector.
Interest is a gentleman and an explorer. “For the joy of the adventure!” he cries. Having mastered his selfish hunger for more, he is free to delight in the world on her own terms. And, as if to show her appreciation for being treated like a lady, creation showers gifts of understanding on his head.
But Wonder is a lover. Interest is not enough when he realizes that what he loves is beyond him. Her beauty is sublime. Her meaning is endless. Wonder falls to his knees in awe before a mountain vista, an oceanic storm, or the intricacies of an atom. And he says nothing, because he is always breathless.
When I listen with curiosity, I want to know something about you.
When I listen with interest, I want to understand you.
When I listen with wonder, I simply want to be with you.
